Tropical Mathematics in Manchester

We are a group of researchers in Manchester interested in tropical/max-plus mathematics and its applications. Our research spans pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and application areas in the natural sciences and engineering disciplines.

The focus of pure research is the project Multiplicative Structure of Tropical Matrix Algebra. Led by Mark Kambites and funded by EPSRC grant EP/H000801/1, the project seeks to understand the abstract algebraic (semigroup-theoretic and group-theoretic) structure of tropical matrices under multiplication. Research into applications is under the umbrella of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Computational and Dynamical Analysis (CICADA), and so far has included applications in biochemistry and microprocessor design, as well as the development of methods for understanding stochastic max-plus systems.
