Research in Actuarial Science

Actuarial science consists of evaluating risk in the insurance and finance industries through the use of mathematical and statistical methods. The pure essence of this area of research is to provide solutions for quantifying the future uncertainty.

The research interests of Dr Asimit intersect the areas of applied probability and actuarial science. The application of probabilistic and statistical methods to solve problems in finance and insurance represents his main field of research. A primary area of interest involves evaluation of the occurrence of rare events. The severe financial implications of extreme events represents the main reason for identifying proper quantitative tools.

Insurance companies often use reinsurance as a mechanism for sharing risk, particularly when there is the possibility of catastrophic losses. A more recent topic of Dr Asimit involves the assessment of the risk taken by the reinsurer in the presence of layer reinsurance arrangements, which are based on a few high upper order statistics of the claims.
