Applied Mathematics
The Applied Mathematics Unit has a long-standing international reputation for its research. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise 25% of our activity was rated as internationally World-Leading (4*). This is the largest proportion outside of Oxford, Cambridge and Warwick. This research activity is led by thirteen professors with expertise in a range of topics, including Combustion Theory and Bushfires (Dold); Computational Mechanics and Biomechanics (Heil); Granular Flow (Gray); Dynamical Systems (Broomhead, Glendinning); Financial Mathematics (Duck, Fedotov); High Speed Fluid Dynamics (Gajjar); Inverse Problems (Lionheart); Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing (Dongarra, Higham, Silvester) and Waves (Abrahams).

Applied Mathematics at Manchester has a strong tradition for research excellence, with past leadership provided by Sir Horace Lamb FRS, Sydney Chapman FRS, Edward Milne FRS, Douglas Hartree FRS, Sydney Goldstein FRS, Sir James Lighthill FRS, Fritz Ursell FRS and Robin Bullough. BAMC'08 was the fiftieth anniversary of the first British Theoretical Mechanics Colloquium which was held in Manchester in 1959.
